The #1 Secret to Simplicity: Engagement, Education, and Plan Design | Doug Bermudez

March 4, 2026

In this episode of Gray to Great, host Dan Dal Degan sits down with Doug Bermudez, Managing Director at Strategic Retirement Partners, about the strategies and mindset that make retirement plan advising effective. Doug shares how his bilingual background and career experiences have shaped his approach to participant education, plan design, and advisor leadership. He explains why clarity, simplicity, and thoughtful communication are essential when guiding both plan sponsors and participants through complex retirement concepts.

Doug also explores how advisors can leverage technology, including short-form videos and digital tools, to engage participants effectively while maintaining a personal touch. Throughout the conversation, he highlights the importance of fiduciary responsibility, designing plans that deliver long-term outcomes, and building advisory teams where each member’s strengths are maximized.

Key Insights from Doug’s Conversation

A central theme in Doug’s approach is the idea of “simplicity with impact.” He emphasizes that advisors must translate complex concepts like collective investment trusts (CITs) and 401(k) and 403(b) options into language that participants can understand and act upon. Doug leverages his bilingual background and cultural insight to tailor communications to be clear, informed, and relevant to the diverse employee populations he serves.

Doug also stresses the power of technology to improve engagement without losing the human connection. He relies on short, focused videos, QR codes linking to resources, and clear instructions to help participants navigate retirement programs quickly and confidently. For advisors, this approach balances efficiency with thoughtful guidance, enabling better outcomes for both participants and plan sponsors.

Another key takeaway is the emphasis on team structure and leadership. Doug believes that empowering team members to own their lanes, complement each other’s strengths, and see the impact of their work creates a culture of accountability and excellence. This philosophy not only improves participant experiences but drives long-term success for advisory practices.

Throughout the episode, Doug reflects on the lessons that have guided his career, including the value of mentorship and the importance of asking “so what?” in every decision, and he shares how these lessons continue to inform his work today.
